Marlon Brando: Life Is A Lie

Interview with Marlon Brando
Conducted by James Grissom
1990

Life is a lie, a series of lies, stumbling toward the rare truth. To live is to lie. We lie to ourselves and tell ourselves--and others--that the theatre and the films have merit and value and that our current project is wonderful and has taught us so much, and we hope that one day--one day soon--the lie will be true, and then we can say that we have not wasted our lives and our lies.

We lie about being in love until suddenly we are in love, and the lies are forgotten or justified because the lies were the pavement across which we walked toward the true love.

We simply lie, because the truth of things would prevent us from getting up and moving and doing anything.

We are myth-makers if we are surviving.
