Greta Garbo: The Nordic Soul
Interview with Tennessee Williams
Conducted by James Grissom
New Orleans
1982
We met at one of those lazy Sunday afternoon affairs [at Ruth Ford's apartment in the Dakota]. There was the tinkling of music in the background--records or live humans, I cannot tell you--and some food and some liquor. Wonderful, ebullient people all around, blending into the polished wood on the walls, and one dour, beautiful woman: Greta Garbo. That first conversation was about Louis Bromfield, how to cook a steak, and Knut Hamsun, whom she felt best captured the Nordic soul.
